April 2022 Young Planet Leader - Sri Nihal Tammana

Sri Nihal Tammana is the 12-year-old founder of Recycle My Battery. Recycle My Battery was created with the intention to make the Earth a better place to live.

Nihal came to understand that batteries are an essential part of the world. People weren’t just going to give them up, and why should they? They’re incredibly useful. Surely there must be a way to prevent them from ending up in landfills. That realization made him want to do something to help, so he started collecting batteries in his school and the local community. His dad would drive him around town to collect used batteries then take them to free recycling points at stores

Unfortunately, after a few weeks of this, the stores started to tell him they couldn’t accept his batteries anymore as he was bringing so many. This made Nihal realize he couldn’t rely on other people anymore and would need to take the initiative himself. So, he decided to start his own non-profit—Recycle My Battery.

Recycle My Battery aims to increase the rate of sustainable battery disposal to help the environment and fight climate change. They have chosen two main strategies to do this: education and facilitation. By focusing their efforts on these two things, Nihal believes we can make the greatest impact on the greatest number of people and help to reduce the negative effects of improper battery disposal on the environment and climate.

To make it easier for people to recycle, they have focused on installing recycling bins with free two-way shipping in areas with high footfall. With the help of their partner, Call2Recycle, they strategically place bins in easy-to-find locations.

Recycle My Battery is proud to say that so far, they have collected and recycled more than 450,000+ used batteries, and educated more than 35 million people on the importance and need of recycling used batteries properly. This could not have been possible without the support of their amazing team of 650+ young kids. He is now in the Guinness book of world records for the longest line of batteries 31,204.
